Crew1501Events

What the Crew will do is up to you!

  • The weekend of 8 Jan, we tried skiing and tubing (and pool, air hockey, DDR, ...), and other things as we think of them.
    • Hope you can join us next time, because the Greater Pittsburgh Council (GPC) has invited us back.
    • We also met some really cool folks from Crew 1717 (external link) in Fredricksburg, VA. BTW, if you think tubing is lame, you should try it using Crew 1717 "rules" (must bring a bike pump and can of Pam next year).
    • See the small calendar in the upper right corner? Click on the "8" in January. Or click on "calendar" in the menu in the left column and go to 8 January. Hope you'll be pleasantly surprised!
  • Since Fall 2009, our Crew has had two monthly events, and done service projects (as staff). We lead monthly Varsity, Venturing and Ship Roundtables for Old Dominion District. We also help plan and run events for the National Capitol Area Teen Council (for example, Venturing After Dark). We may be few in number, but we can show you how a few can make a big difference. And a few more can do a lot more. Send us an e-mail, see us at Roundtable, or drop into a meeting. But if you want to attend a meeting, you'd better check on where we're meeting; Crew decides the location, sometimes at the last minute (often in reaction to school assignments).

Scheduled

(2009/2010 season; coming soon. Planning meeting was 22 Aug 09! Watch this space for event details!)

  • In the works: Out Island Adventure (2010-07-01 through 2010-07-10).
    • Primitive camping surrounded by ocean. How cool is that!? Imagine returning to school with a "How I spent my summer vacation" where every response is "Way COOL!" $700 per person (plus travel). We have two female adults in our group of 8 who have paid a total of $350 toward the trip.
    • For info, click on any/all of these (also available from the Seabase site):

History

These links will take you to photos of past events (as of 2009-07-19, uploading files to the new server):
Some suggestions:
10 "Brian, what are we looking for in this picture?"
11 "snake skin on driftwood"
12 "okay nice view, but missed the carrion flying by..."
14 "pretty wetlands, still no bird flying by"
16 "Orange mushrooms, Don't eat me!"
23 "FORE!"
31 "the fairway is in the middle. Why is everyone in the rough?"

  • 2008-08-15, WiiLockIn (external link): Crew 1501 hosts a night of games and food. A great time was held by the attendees, Venturers and guests, even the parents.
  • 2008-08-02, NorthernTier (external link): Crew 1501 flys/drives to Canada to canoe in a foreign country. 75 miles in 80 hrs! One of the Crew brings e-coli along, but manages to lose it before too long. There supposedly was a group of Boy Scouts from Troop 1501 also on the trip, but the Webmaster hasn't seen any photos. Obviously, those guys are not as competent as the Crew. Probably why they were designated as crew "B".
  • 2008-07-19, CERT (external link): Our Crew President and Advisor help county emergency response teams in a simulated crash into a bleachers. Our Advisor was a middle-aged diabetic who lost control while driving through the parking lot with his "daughter".
  • 2008-07-12, CaledonStatePark (external link): Our advisor and his son check out Caledon State Part, about 90 minutes away from Springfield, VA. Nice trails in a hardwoods forest, almost no brush, almost no ground cover; several layers of dead leaves.
  • 2008-07-08, RiverineAssaultCraft (external link): Event photos for the tour on 8-July-2008 of the Potomac River via the US Marine Corp RAC.
More sites and links will be added as the Webmaster finds the time to resurrect the files from the archives; the Crew had been using the gallery of Troop 1501, until the site was taken down by script kitties and crackers.

Unscheduled questionrolleyes

In the dream stage

  • Sailing the Bahamas (external link): The link is to a skipper who our Advisor met who runs a charter service. Unlike the tall ships program in BSA, the captain of the Keewatin teaches marlinspike seamanship (and nutrition!). This is a fun learning experience, not just bobbing on water.
  • Well, Meridan District no longer supports two sites I liked. http://www.meridianmatters.org/Catalog.wci/CampBook/NATHICAM.htm (external link) had a list of high adventure sites. Should have made a copy, because their webmaster has transferred content to another (unknown) domain and might have forgotten this very useful page. I'll be looking for whatever replaced http://www.meridiandistrict.net/venture.html (external link), their Venture site.
  • Blowguns (external link) as a sport? Match caliber and length (capacity of tube) to lung capacity (bigger gun needs larger lungs). According to http://www.blow-gun.com/ (external link), gear is affordable. Instead of darts, use paintballs.
  • Rope gymnastics (external link) anyone? Staying fit using a rope and two trees. Pipe insulation is optional, but cuts down on bruising.
